Institutions, organizations, and individuals throughout the United States; and in The Netherlands; Toronto, Canada; and Hiroshima, Japan will observe the birthday of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and American Civil Rights Leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on 15 January 2018. An internationally acclaimed organization that has a successful track record for transforming the lives of and working with youth and reducing violence, the House of Umoja, Inc. (www.houseofumoja.org) is marking the observance of Dr. King’s birthday with the release of the Winter 2018 issues of UMOJA Magazine which pays homage to Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and American Civil Rights Leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and also honors other historical African American men. UMOJA Magazine’s Winter 2018 issue’s release on Wednesday, 17 January 2018 at the University of Pennsylvania’s Rotunda Theatre at 4014 Walnut Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is part of the PEACE-A-THON program which is a component of the University of Pennsylvania’s commemoration of the life and legacy of Dr. King which commences on Monday 15 January 2018 and concludes on Wednesday, 31 January 2018 (http://www.upenn.edu/aarc/mlk/ calendar_mlk.htm).
The viewing of “A Place To Call Home” which was produced by the Free Library of Philadelphia will be orchestrated by the PEACE-A-THON program on Wednesday, 17 January 2018 at 4:00 P.M. (E.D.T.) and 6:00 P.M. (E.D.T.). “A Place To Call Home” chronicles the accomplishments and history of the House of Umoja, Inc. and is written by Kimmika Williams-Witherspoon, Ph.D., Associate Professor in Temple University’s School of Theater, Film and Media Arts. The film cast members include the Twin Poets from the Peabody Award-winning hit HBO Series Def Poets and Ms. Zuhairah McGill, an actress known for her roles in “One Of Too Many: Part One” and “Forbidden”, the Founder and Producing Artistic Director of First World Theater Ensemble, and a former Director In Residence at the Prince Music Theater. Ms. McGill has directed numerous plays; performed in numerous off-Broadway and national tour productions, and is the recipient of numerous accolades which, include but are not limited to, the Barrymore NominatIon for Outstanding Leading Actress In A Play, DC Excellence In Black Theater Award, and the Most Distinguished Director Theatre Award.
PEACE-A-THON will also facilitate the following events on Wednesday, 17 January 2018;
• Viewing of Music Video’s “Stop Driving While Texting” created by Mr. Keith Mungin and “Life Outside These Streets” created by Jon McKay
• 5:00 P.M. – Viewing and Discussion with Mr. Nazir Alston, a young filmmaker whose film making credits include “Incomplete Cell”, “Men Of Understanding” and a soon-to-be-released film on Black Wall Street.
• 7:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. - A book signing by Mr. Quasim Sims Adams and a film preview of “Litty City” produced by Mr. Lateef Bey which was filmed exclusively in Philadelphia and addresses the significance of violence and crime in our communities.
• 8:00 P.M – 10:00 P.M. – Live staged adaptation and performance of “SAY IT LOUD, I’M BLACK AND I AM PROUD”, presented by the National Black Authors Tour, the National Black Spoken Arts Tour and Maurice Brian Henderson, Ph.D., Adjunct Fellow, Center for Public Health at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
On Thursday, 18 January 2018, the Jubilee School (www.jubileeschool.net), a number of whose students served as Contributing Editors to UMOJA Magazine’s Winter 2018 issue, will be the recipient of the University of Pennsylvania’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award in conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Interfaith Program. The award ceremony will be held in Houston Hall at 3417 Spruce Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mr. John Noltner, award-winning photographer and founder of “A Peace Of My Mind”, a multimedia arts project which is built around the question, “What Does Peace Mean To You?” will serve as the ceremony’s guest speaker. A reception will follow the ceremony in the Bodek Lounge at Houston Hall.
St. Mary’s Church at 3916 Locust Walk on the University of Pennsylvania’s campus will serve as the site of a live concert, courtesy of “The Unity” Performance Arts Ensemble with the National Black Arts Spoken Word Tour on Friday, 19 January 2018 at 6:00 P.M. Attendees will be treated to a light meal.
