DECORAH, IOWA (USA) – SHEILA RADFORD-HILL, Ph.D., the Executor Director of Luther College’s Diversity Center has announced that the academic institution will participate in the worldwide observance of 2010 International Men’s Day (www.international-mens-day.com) on Friday, 19 November 2010. . The theme for 2010 International Men's Day is -- "Our Children ... Our Future" – which acknowledges the 48 hour partnership that International Men's Day shares with Universal Children's Day which is celebrated on 20 November 2010 and is endorsed by the United Nations. International Men's Day celebrates and honors the contributions and sacrifices of Men to our families, communities, and our world. It is a worldwide observance that resonates with Women as well as Men. In 2009, Men and Women from countries throughout our global village which included Singapore, the United Kingdom, Moldova, Germany, Brazil, Holland, New Zealand, Hungary, South Africa, Georgia, Malta, United States, Italy, Ghana, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Australia, and India celebrated International Men's Day under the theme "Positive Male Role Models".


"Encouraging men, in partnership with women, to take care of themselves, their children, and their communities is a message that the world is listening for. We want to elevate our thinking about the power that men have to really make a difference worldwide and we want the Luther community to celebrate positive manhood,” Dr. Radford-Hill commented when reached for comment concerning Luther College’s participation in 2010 International Men’s Day.


“We are excited about Luther College’s participation in the global observance of 2010 International Men’s Day. It is an honor to work with Dr. Radford-Hill and Luther College,” remarked Diane A. Sears, the United States Coordinator for 2010 International Men’s Day.


International Men’s Day was founded in 1999 by Jerome Teelucksingh, Ph.D., a faculty member of the History Department at the University of West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. Six (6) Core Objectives comprise the framework and foundation for individuals and organizations celebrating International Men’s Day throughout our global village. The six (6) Core Objectives for International Men’s Day which were established in 1999 by Dr. Teelucksingh are:

• To promote positive male role models; not just movie stars and sports men but everyday, working class men who are living decent, honest lives.


• To celebrate men’s positive contributions to society, community, family, marriage, child care, and to the environment.


• To focus on men’s health and wellbeing; social, emotional, physical and spiritual.


• To highlight discrimination against men; in areas of social services, social attitudes and expectations, and law.


• To improve gender relations and promote gender equality.


• To create a safer, better world; where people can be safe and grow to reach their full potential.
