The City of Philadelphia will be one of 550 cities throughout the United States to participate in the National 2009 Million Fathers March which is encouraging Fathers in every neighborhood throughout the City of Philadelphia to escort their children to school on the first day of the 2009-2010 academic year and to play a proactive role in their children’s education.
On Tuesday, 8 September 2009 at 7:00 A.M., The Honorable Michael Nutter, Mayor of the City of Philadelphia will give further support to the involvement of Philadelphia’s Fathers in their children’s education and their participation in the National 2009 Million Father March when he greets and makes brief remarks to between approximately 50 to 200 Men at the House of Umoja, Inc. at 5625 Master Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who will assemble there for a light breakfast before marching to Overbrook High School at 5958 Lancaster Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In a September 3, 2009 article published by The Philadelphia Tribune, Mayor Nutter stated that the National Million Father March had the potential to change the entire City of Philadelphia and that “involvement should run deeper than a walk on the first day of school and extend to the whole year and beyond”.
“Fathers can, should and must play a critical role in the education of their children. . . . That would really help your children and this entire city,” Mayor Nutter remarked.
The approximately 50 to 200 Men who will march from the House Of Umoja, Inc. to Overbrook High School will be joined by Pennsylvania State Senator Vincent Hughes, United States Congressman Chaka Fattah and City of Philadelphia Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr. in connection with this aspect of Philadelphia’s participation in the 2009 National Million Father March.
