DADDY'S HEART: CHARLIE AND DON MATHIS

WHERE WAS I BORN?
RIGHT HERE IN SAN ANTONIO.
NO, WHERE WAS I BORN?
AT THE METHODIST HOSPITAL.
MOMMY SAID I WAS BORN IN HER TUMMY.
YES, THAT'S RIGHT.
MOMMY SAID ONLY GIRLS CAN HAVE BABIES.
MEN CAN HAVE BABIES TOO.
DADDIES CAN'T HAVE BABIES.
SURE THEY CAN.
BUT NOT IN THEIR TUMMY.
NO. IN THEIR HEART.
HOW DID I GET INTO HER TUMMY?
I PUT MY HEART NEXT TO HER HEART.
AND THEN YOU PUT ME IN HER TUMMY?
YES, THAT'S RIGHT.
WHY?
BECAUSE WE LOVED EACH OTHER
AND WE WANTED A BABY TO LOVE.
SO YOU HAD ME?
YES.
YOU STILL LOVE ME?
YES, I DO. WITH ALL MY HEART!
I LOVE YOU TOO!

What a fine thing it is to see a consistently good writer reach deep within and touch the thing that gives him his essence. With Don, it's his profound love for his Charlie. At that point he rises even above himself.

The gift of Love may indeed be the Greatest of Treasures, of which there may be no measure.

MORE IMPORTANTLY,the Guiding and Merciful Hand of our Almighty may indeed offers Compassion, Comfort and Refreshment to those who may travail or be heavy laden.

I have known Don for years and have heard him read countless poems. Daddy's Heart soars to the top of the list. I have printed and mail a copy to my adult son in the Army and my three other teen children. Great job Don & Charlie!

This beautiful poem should be read to every child from its father. Don has always had a deep & abiding love for Charlie as this poem demonstrates. How great it would be if every child could feel this kind of love.Don has always put Charlie first in his life & I admire him greatly for that. I am happy to call him friend.
