MARK McCOSKER, MEN'S COMMITTEE QUEENSLAND PUBLIC SECTOR UNION CHAIR TAPPED AS AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL COORDINATOR FOR 2010 INTERNATIONAL MEN'S DAY

AUSTRALIA - 8 MARCH 2010 --The International Men's Day Coordination Committee has announced that Mr. Mark McCosker, Chair of the Men's Committee Queensland Public Sector Union has been selected as the Australian National Coordinator for 2010 International Men's Day (http://www.international-mens-day.com) which will be observed worldwide on Friday, 19 November 2010.

Mr. McCosker
will coordinate the participation of individuals, organizations, institutions, and communities throughout Australia in the worldwide observance of International Men's Day which celebrates and honours the sacrifices that Men have made and continue to make to our families, communities, and our society. The theme for 2010 International Men's Day is "Our Children ... Our Future" - a theme that celebrates the 48 hour partnership that International Men's Day has with Universal Children's Day, which is celebrated on 20th November 2010 and endorsed by the United Nations. Our children's futures are greatly enriched by the presence of positive male role models.

"Mr. McCosker was brought to our attention by Jason Thompson, Historian and Global Promotions Coordinator for International Men's Day and member of the International Men's Day Coordination Committee. We look forward to working with Mr. McCosker and supporting him in his role as Australian national coordinator for 2010 International Men's Day," stated Diane A. Sears, United States Coordinator for 2010 International Men's Day and a member of the International Men's Day Coordination Committee.

International Men's Day was founded in 1999 by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a History Lecturer at the West Indies University, Trinidad Tobago, and the Chairman of the International Men's Day Coordination Committee whose membership comprises Warwick Marsh (Australia), Global Media Coordinator for International Men's Day, Jason Thompson (Australia), Historian and Global Promotions Coordinator for International Men's Day, Uma Challa, Coordinator for India - for International Men's Day, and Diane A. Sears, Coordinator for the United States of America - International Men's Day.

Mr McCosker stated, "I am extremely humbled and excited to take on this role to help further increase the awareness of IMD in Australia. Throughout history men have displayed true altruism and made the ultimate sacrifice for family and country. Men are employed in the most dangerous of jobs that ensure we all live in a safe and prospering society. Men also fill a nurturing role with their children. Over many years I have been involved in coaching junior sports and to many boys and girls, sometimes being the only male role model in their lives. As we look around our schools we find a disparity between male and female teaching numbers which further reduces the presence of male role models. International Men’s Day is one avenue by which we can highlight the positive values men can model for our children. I am currently the VP Membership of the Ipswich Acapella Harmony Club, an all male barbershop chorus, encouraging men to sing and assist in the community. My working life has been in Education Queensland for the past 30 years where hopefully I still offer a positive contribution to “Our Children – Our Future”

Dr. Teelucksingh, in 1999, put into place the Core Objectives of International Men's Day which gives individuals and groups wanting to celebrate International Men's Day in their own community, the framework and foundation for their celebrations. The Core Objectives of International Men's Day which were ratified by members of the International Men's Day Committee in December 2009 are as follows:

* To promote positive male role models; not just movie stars and sports men but everyday, working class men who are living decent, honest lives.

* To celebrate men's positive contributions to society, community, family, marriage, child care, and to the environment.

* To focus on men's health and wellbeing; social, emotional, physical and spiritual.

* To highlight discrimination against men; in areas of social services, social attitudes and expectations, and law.

* To improve gender relations and promote gender equality.

* To create a safer, better world; where people can be safe and grow to reach their full potential.

PHILADELPHIA, PA (USA) – 7 MARCH 2010 – The House Of Umoja, Inc. (http://www.houseofumoja.org) is initiating a Call To Action beginning on Sunday, 28 March 2010 (Palm Sunday) through Sunday, 4 April 2010 (Easter Sunday) in an effort to move the City of Philadelphia and its children to commit to nonviolence and create solutions for the critical underlying issues that may have triggered two disturbances involving teenagers in Center City Philadelphia on 16 February 2010 and 3 March 2010.

“The House Of Umoja, Inc. is initiating a Call To Action to parents, educators, legislators, law enforcement professionals, business and religious leaders, and concerned community members to form Partnerships of Peace with the House of Umoja, Inc. Let’s work together to move the City of Philadelphia and its children to commit to nonviolence through the signing of the IMANI Pledge™; to create a nurturing environment for our children at school and at home; and to bring healing to our communities. As we move to design and implement solutions to the underlying issues that triggered the events of 16 February 2010 and 3 March 2010, it is imperative that our children become active participants in this process. We must also include our children’s voice in any and all dialogues and decisions about bringing peace and healing to our communities and our city,” remarked Queen Mother Falaka Fattah, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the House Of Umoja, Inc.

On January 1, 1974 Queen Mother Falaka Fattah coordinated a conference which was attended by over 400 gang members. David Fattah was the chief negotiator with the attendees who signed an agreement he authored called the IMANI Pact. Through its Faith Of Our Fathers Peace Campaign and the IMANI Pledge™ launched in 2006, the House Of Umoja, Inc. is moving a new generation of children in the City of Philadelphia to commit to nonviolence.

“The IMANI PledgeTM is a contractual agreement signed by children and youth of the City of Philadelphia that they will not engage in acts of violence in and outside of school. In signing the Pledge, the youth and children acknowledge that their forefathers brought peace to the City of Philadelphia as youths, and that they too, can do the same. The Pledge ends with the commitment statement ‘Let my word be my bond’,” explained Mr. David Fattah.

The House Of Umoja, Inc. has provided a life line for over approximately 3,000 young urban males between the ages of 15 through 18 in Philadelphia. The internationally acclaimed organization’s successful track record of transforming and working with youths has moved universities and institutions that include, but are not limited to, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Prevention and the Center for Disease Control to seek the expertise of Queen Mother Falaka Fattah and her husband Mr. David Fattah in the areas of gang reduction, youth programming, and community organizing. Former United States Presidents Jimmy Carter and the late Ronald Reagan have recognized the House Of Umoja, Inc. for its pioneering work which has been documented in published articles such as A Summons To Life, by Robert Woodson of the American Enterprise Institute in 1981 and The Violent Juvenile Offender by Paul DeMuro and Richard Allison of the National Council On Crime And Delinquency in 1984.

SEVENTEEN: DON MATHIS

IT'S THE AGE OF INVINCIBILITY -
OR SO MY SON WOULD LIKE TO HOPE
BUT THE HARD AND FAST REALITY
IS LIFE IS FRAGILE AND THAT'S NO JOKE.

SOON HE WILL BE IN HIS SENIOR YEAR -
AND I'LL BE A SENIOR CITIZEN.

HE WILL GO EXPLORE FROM FAR TO NEAR -
I'LL BE A NURSING HOME DENIZEN.

THE OLD APRON STRINGS ARE FRAYING THIN.
SOMEDAY SOON THEY (AND HE) WILL BUST FREE.

NEW LIVES FOR US BOTH WILL THEN BEGIN
AND OUR 'US' WILL SPLIT TO 'HIM' AND ME.'

FRESH AIR FUND SEARCHING FOR HOST FAMILIES FOR SUMMER 2010

In 2009, The Fresh Air Fund's Volunteer Host Family program, called Friendly Town, gave close to 5,000 New York City boys and girls, ages six to 18, free summer experiences in the country and the suburbs. Volunteer host families shared their friendship and homes up to two weeks or more in 13 Northeastern states from Virginia to Maine and Canada.

The Fresh Air Fund relies on donations to provide memorable summers to NYC children.

The Fresh Air Fund needs hosts for the summer of 2010.

More than 65% of all Fresh Air children are reinvited to stay with their host family, year after year.

Thanks to host families who open up their homes for a few weeks each summer, children growing up in New York City’s toughest neighborhoods have experienced the joys of Fresh Air experiences.

Fresh Air Fund Host Families

"It is rewarding to see the smile on our Fresh Air child's face as she enjoys the simple things we take for granted..."

Friendly Town host families are volunteers who live in the suburbs or small town communities. Host families range in size, ethnicity and background, but share the desire to open their hearts and homes to give city children an experience they will never forget. Hosts say the Fresh Air experience is as enriching for their own families, as it is for the inner-city children. There are no financial requirements for hosting a child. Volunteers may request the age-group and gender of the Fresh Air youngster they would like to host. Stories about real Fresh Air host families and their New York City visitors are just a click away!

Fresh Air Children

Fresh Air children are boys and girls, six to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on first-time visits are six to 12 years old and stay for either one or two weeks. Youngsters who are re-invited by the same family may continue with The Fund through age 18, and many enjoy longer summertime visits, year after year. A visit to the home of a warm and loving volunteer host family can make all the difference in the world to an inner-city child. All it takes to create lifelong memories is laughing in the sunshine and making new friends.

The majority of Fresh Air children are from low-income communities. These are often families without the resources to send their children on summer vacations. Most inner-city youngsters grow up in towering apartment buildings without large, open outdoor play spaces. Concrete playgrounds cannot replace the freedom of running barefoot through the grass or riding bikes down country lanes.

Fresh Air children are registered by more than 90 participating social service and community organizations located in disadvantaged neighborhoods in the five boroughs of New York City. These community-based agencies are in close contact with children in need of summer experiences in rural and suburban areas. Each agency is responsible for registering children for the program.

What do Fresh Air children enjoy?

Playing in the backyard
Laughing in the sunshine
Catching fireflies
Riding bicycles

Learning to swim
Running barefoot through the grass
Gazing at the stars on moonlit nights
Building sandcastles
Making new friends
Simple pleasures of life away from the inner-city

You can give a child the experience of alifetime with your gift to The Fresh Air Fund!

Every year, The Fresh Air Fund gives thousands of inner-city children the priceless gift of fun – and opens the door to a lifetime of opportunities.

Whether it's a two-week trip to visit a volunteer host family, or a fun-filled and educational stay at one of our camps, our programs make for unforgettable memories – and open a world of new friendships and fresh possibilities.

PRESIDENTIAL WHO'S WHO AMONG BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVERS RECOGNIZES HOUSE OF UMOJA'S QUEEN MOTHER FALAKA FATTAH

PHILADELPHIA, PA (USA) – 17 FEBRUARY 2010 – The Directory of Presidential Who’s Who among Business and Professional Achievers recognizes individuals who have reached a level of recognizable success in their respective field. This year the directory will be registered in the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. Among those being listed is Queen Mother Falaka Fattah, President and Founder of the House of UMOJA. The House of UMOJA was created by Queen Mother Falaka Fattah as a publishing house in September 1968 and later developed by her and her husband, David Fattah into a youth serving agency in June 1969.

Queen Mother Falaka Fattah was a member of the Executive Committee of Greater Philadelphia Partnership, Women and Mayors Drug and Alcohol Commission, National Center for Neighborhood Enterprise, and a Task Leader for the School District of Philadelphia.

The internationally acclaimed organization’s successful track record of transforming and working with youths has moved universities and institutions that include, but are not limited to, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Prevention and the Center for Disease Control, to seek the expertise of Queen Mother Falaka Fattah and her husband Mr.

Tapped in the Summer of 2007 to lead and organize the National Million Father March in the City of Philadelphia by Chicago, Illinois’ Phillip Jackson, the Founder and Executive Director of the Black Star Project (http://www.blackstarproject.org) and the creator of the annual event, The House Of Umoja, Inc. continues to be a powerful voice in the Global Dialogue on Fatherhood and a fixture in the International Fatherhood Community. For the third consecutive year, on 8 September 2009, the first day of the 2009-2010 academic year, the House Of Umoja, Inc. moved Fathers in the City of Philadelphia to redefine their parental roles and responsibilities by “stepping up and out” and escorting their children to school. The City of Philadelphia was one of 550 cities throughout the United States participating in the National 2009 Million Father March which, on 25 August 2009, received an endorsement from The Honorable Arne Duncan, United States Secretary of Education.

Through its “Think Green Peace Campaign”, a multi-tiered initiative launched in July 2008, the House Of Umoja, Inc. is transforming vacant lots into gardens that yield 30 varieties of produce, engaging Philadelphia’s children in learning about the environment, how food is produced, and how they become self-sufficient and beautify their environment. The “Think Green Peace” Campaign has spawned collaboration between senior members and the children and youth in our communities. Senior members in Philadelphia’s communities are showing our children and youth how to get the land ready for planting, how to plant seeds, and how to produce food. It has also spawned a coalition consisting of our youth, business community, social entrepreneurs, religious institutions, legislators, and grassroots community organizations that is working to beautify the communities they live and work, to save the environment, and to create options for self-sufficiency.

2009 INTERNATIONAL MEN'S DAY: HONORING POSITIVE MALE ROLE MODELS AND MOVING MEN'S ISSUES TO THE WORLD STAGE

For a number of reasons and in many ways, 2009 was a year in which boundaries -- visible to some, yet devastatingly inhibiting to all -- were transcended. It was a year of hope and inspiration and a year in which Life threw us a few curve balls. Yet we managed to scramble to our feet, dust ourselves off, and get back in the game. It was also a year in which positive male role models from all Walks of Life throughout our global village were honored and recognized on International Men’s Day which was observed on Thursday, 19 November 2009. Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Georgia, Ghana, India, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Malta, Moldova, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Kingdom, and the United States are a sample of the countries that participated in the worldwide observance of 2009 International Men’s Day and its theme “Positive Male Role Models”. Newspaper headlines, websites, blogs, and online social media networks such as FACEBOOK, and TWITTER, heralded 2009 International Men’s Day as a call for global collaboration to address the challenges and problems men face; improve gender relations between men and women; and promote gender equality. This global celebration and honoring of the selfless sacrifices and contributions that our Fathers, Uncles, Grandfathers, Brothers, and Sons unceremoniously make to families, communities, nations, and our planet is speedily moving Men’s Issues to the center of the world stage.

Trinidad and Tobago was the first nation to celebrate International Men’s Day (“IMD”) on 19 November 1999. Why November 19th? The IMD celebration in Trinidad and Tobago was conceived and coordinated by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a History Lecturer at the University of West Indies and IMD’s founder. November 19th is the birthday of Dr. Teelucksingh’s father and his role model. Dr. Teelucksingh also describes November 19th as the day his country’s football team “created a level of unity which crossed gender, religious, and other ethnic divisions”.

Why did Dr. Teelucksingh see a need for IMD?

“I realized there was no day for men . . . some have said that there is Father’s Day. But what about young boys, teenagers, and men who are not Fathers?” Dr. Teelucksingh observed.

So, what is IMD about?

IMD highlights positive male role models – “every day working class men who are living decent and honest lives”. IMD is about creating a safer and better world. IMD has Core Objectives which were initially created in 1999 by Dr. Teelucksingh. The Core Objectives which were formally ratified in 2009 by the IMD Coordination Committee, chaired by Dr. Teelucksingh, appear below:

To promote positive male role models; not just movie stars and sports men but everyday, working class men who are living decent, honest lives.

• To celebrate men’s positive contributions to society, community, family, marriage, child care, and to the environment.

• To focus on men’s health and wellbeing; social, emotional, physical, and spiritual.
.
• To highlight discrimination against men; in areas of social services, social attitudes and expectations, and law.

• To improve gender relations and promote gender equality.

• To create a safer, better world; where people can be safe and grow to reach their full potential.

When asked to comment about the Core Objectives for IMD, Dr. Teelucksingh offered the following:

“These illuminating objectives have been designed to strengthen and provide direction to the Global Men’s Movement. Its all-inclusive nature will ensure there will be a better world for future generations. The carefully defined themes will be embraced by persons from all walks of life. These six powerful pillars will become the blueprint for a movement which will positively impact on the lives of the oppressed, poverty-stricken, alienated and marginalized.”.

Several weeks after the beginning of the last quarter of 2009, Warwick Marsh of Australia brought together individuals from diverse geographic locations and professional backgrounds. Marsh who is the IMD Global Coordinator and Founder of Dads4Kids Fatherhood Foundation (http://www.fathersonline.org) created a Global Team that worked to raise awareness and interest in the worldwide observance of 2009 IMD. Who were members of the Global Team? Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh (Trinidad and Tobago), Founder of International Men’s Day, History Lecturer at the University of West Indies, and Chairman of the IMD Coordination Committee; Jason Thompson, IMD Historian and Global Promotions Coordinator (Australia); Elizabeth Celi, Ph.D., MAPS (Australia); Uma Challa (India), IMD Coordinator for India; David Hatfield (Canada), a leadership consultant and facilitator and IMD Coordinator for Canada; and D.A. Sears who served as the IMD Coordinator for the United States.

IMD Global Team members kept in touch with one another through e-mail. E-mail was also the predominant vehicle used by IMD Global Team members to communicate information about the worldwide observance of 2009 International Men’s Day to individuals, Men’s Groups, Fatherhood Groups, institutions, and grassroots community organizations. A consistent flow of press releases concerning 2009 International Men’s Day were distributed to the electronic and print media, individuals, Men’s Groups, institutions, Fatherhood Groups, community grassroots organizations, Fatherhood Practitioners, and Fatherhood Advocates and uploaded to blogs, websites, FACEBOOK, and LinkedIn. “Tweets” about International Men’s Day 2009 were conveyed on TWITTER. The Dads4Kids Fatherhood Foundation funded a promotional video podcast for 2009 International Men’s Day which was scripted, researched, directed, and produced by three 21-year old men and posted on You Tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gy6Mh_W9r8I&feature=player_embedded). In less than 24 hours, the video posted on You Tube received 153 hits!

Forty-eight hours before the worldwide observance of 2009 International Men’s Day, DADS ON THE AIR (http://www.dadsontheair.net and http://www.893fm.com.au/On-Air), devoted its entire program to 2009 International Men’s Day. DADS ON THE AIR is one of the world’s longest running radio programs that explores Fatherhood issues and a “wide range of social issues around gender and parenthood”; actively promotes a positive view of men, boys, Fatherhood, and co-parenting; and features legislative, political, literary, and academic Thought Leaders from Australia and around the globe. At the invitation of Peter van der Voorde, the producer and presenter of DADS ON THE AIR, Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh; Warwick Marsh, Dr. Elizabeth Celi; Jason Thompson; Frank Crump, an international businessman and Founder of Unified Progress International Education (http://www.upieducation.org) which designed and implements an innovative alternative educational vehicle--a Life Skills Solutions Curriculum™; Uma Challa; and D.A. Sears appeared as guests on the hour-long radio program (the interviews have been uploaded to http://www.dadsontheair.net/storage/shows/Dads_on_the_Air_2009-11-17.mp3). From 10:30 AM through 12:00 PM (Sydney, Australia Time) on Tuesday, 17 November 2009, the DADS ON THE AIR audience were treated to a lively discussion about, among other things, why a worldwide observance such as International Men’s Day is needed, why men are important, and the unique health and parenting issues that confront Men from all Walks of Life throughout our global village.

The American print media along with blogs, websites and online social networks such as FACEBOOK and TWITTER and professional online networks such as LinkedIn created a great level of awareness for and interest in 2009 International Men’s Day in the United States.

Former Los Angeles, California Police Chief Bernard Parks who currently serves on Los Angeles’ City Council and represents its 8th District, published information about 2009 International Men’s Day on his website at http://www.bernardparks.com which was viewed by his constituents.

In a press statement distributed by PR News Wire on 19 November 2009 that recognized International Men’s Day, nationally acclaimed Fathers’ Rights attorney and President Emeritus of the Fatherhood Educational Institute, Jeffery Leving, Esquire who was a participant in the first White House Roundtable On Responsible Fatherhood And Healthy Families on 6 August 2009 in Chicago, Illinois remarked:

“I have a difficult time finding words strong enough to emphasize the importance of fathers in their children's lives.”

In Philadelphia, the United States’ fifth largest metropolitan area and fourth largest media market, The Philadelphia Tribune, a major newspaper, published an article about 2009 International Men’s Day which solicited comments from men in that city about the worldwide observance of International Men’s Day.

The Fourteen Percenter, an international online Fathers’ Rights publication which is published by Don Mathis, a prominent Fathers’ Rights Advocate, in Sherman, Texas, featured information about 2009 International Men’s Day.

The worldwide observance of 2009 International Men’s Day is energizing the Global Dialogue on Fatherhood and Men’s Issues. It is not only moving Men from all Walks of Life throughout our global village to work together to strengthen and empower our families and our communities, it is also moving Women to work with Men to create key “pieces of the puzzle” to developing and sustaining efficiently functioning family units that positively shape the minds and souls of our children – our future – our bridge to the future.

What are some of the members of the Global Team for 2009 International Men's Day saying about 2009 International Men’s Day?

Warwick Marsh, IMD Global Coordinator pointed to the bridge of friendship and understanding that 2009 International Men’s Day is helping to build:

“While the worldwide observance of 2009 International Men’s Day has provided us with an opportunity to honor the sacrifices that Men have made and to celebrate their valuable contributions to our families, communities, and our society, it is also helping to build a bridge of friendship and understanding that transcends the boundaries of geography, religion, politics, culture, language, class, economics, gender, and ethnicity . . . ”

Jason Thompson, Historian for IMD and IMD Global Promotions Coordinator noted the significant increase in interest that 2009 International Men’s Day enjoyed:

“International Men’s Day enjoyed significantly increased interest around the globe this year with a more than doubling of countries hosting events than in 2008. Australia, for instance, jumped from holding a single event in 2008 to this year hosting over 15 formal observations across the country, including the sponsoring of events by four local governments, a speech to honor men in the West Australian State Parliament, and an observation at Parliament House in Canberra with several notable speakers. Similar increases in awareness were reported in other countries, which, in my view, is a truly remarkable trend.”

Uma Challa, 2009 International Men’s Day Coordinator for India hails the observance of 2009 International Men’s Day on Thursday, 19 November 2009 as a remarkable global event and the camaraderie it spawned among Men’s and Father’s Rights Advocates:

“IMD 2009 was a remarkable international event. As many as 25 international men's rights and father's rights groups celebrated the occasion echoing common sentiments and concerns. While IMD may have been celebrated by a few individual nations in the past, the world witnessed the amazing resonance and camaraderie of men's and fathers' rights advocates for the first time in the history of the men's movement in 2009. The theme ‘promoting positive male role models’ has definitely made men and women around the world pause and think about the many contributions and services of men in our lives, about the vulnerability of men and the need to love, care, and support them every day. This is a great sign and I can only see the men's rights movement gaining more and more momentum in the coming years.”

And Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, Founder of IMD and Chairman of the IMD Coordination Committee offered thought-provoking observations about 2009 International Men’s Day:

“International Men’s Day – IMD -- has the potential to become the global medium to heal our world. The concept and themes of IMD are designed to give hope to the depressed, faith to the lonely, comfort to the broken-hearted, transcend barriers, eliminate stereotypes and create a more caring humanity. Since its inception, IMD has blossomed into a movement which promotes goodwill and positively transformed the lives of many persons. Every year I am overjoyed to witness and read testimonies of persons who genuinely believe that the observance of IMD has resulted in greater stability in their lives and guided them from darkness into light.”
